Abstract

New data on morphology and taxonomy of 12 Fragilariopsis species from the East Antarctic ocean are presented. Diagnoses of five species were emended. Fragilariopsis curta, F. sublinearis and F. vanheurckii valves have more striae than it is noted in diagnoses, the width of F. ritscheri valve is increased as well. The most significant changes in comparison with the diagnosis are made for F. ritscheri and F. kerguliensis. The Fragilariopsis species mainly dominate in ice and near-ice plankton assemblages.
