Research interests:

  • Study of regional diversity, taxonomy, ecology and geography of lichenicolous fungi globally.

Keywords: Lichenicolous fungi, biodiversity, taxonomy, ecology, biogeography, floristics, Arctic, Holarctic

Education and work experience:

1982 – graduated from the Department of Geobotany and Darwinism, Faculty of Biology and Soil Science, St. Petersburg (Leningrad) State University.
1989 – Ph.D. thesis « Lichens of the North-West of the Putorana Plateau».
2010 defended doctoral thesis «Lichenicolous fungi of the Russian Arctic».

1983-1994 – Laboratory of Lichenology and Bryology, Komarov Botanical Institute (BIN).
1994-1995 – did an internship at Uppsala University (Sweden) with Prof. R. Santesson on the lichenicolous fungi, and then began to study this group of fungi at the Laboratory of the Systematics and Geography of Fungi, BIN RAN.
1995 – until now – Laboratory of Systematics and Geography of Fungi BIN RAN.

Described new to science: five lichen species, over 100 species and 12 genera of lichenicolous fungi. Researched the diversity of lichens and lichenicolous fungi in all the major sectors of the Arctic. Co-author of the first panarctic check-list of lichens and lichenicolous fungi (Kristinsson et al. 2010) and the first check-list of fungi of the Russian Arctic (Karatygin 1999). Researched the diversity of lichenicolous fungi in many extra-Arctic regions of Russia, as well as in the USA, Canada, Norway, Mongolia, India, Japan, and Vietnam.
